In this 76-minute Office Hours session, we tackled rebranding challenges, ticketing platform integration, contact database strategy, and the fundamentals of tracking advertising ROI. Whether you’re managing a residency venue, scaling outreach, or optimizing your ad spend, you’ll find actionable strategies to tighten your systems and grow your booking pipeline.
[00:28] – AI Confusion & Rebranding
Greg Z discovered that AI was mixing up “The Magician’s Ruse” with “The Magician’s Table” (a competing show in Tampa), causing concern with the competitor’s team. He proactively rebranded to “The True Secret of Magic” to separate his show and teach AI the distinction. Lesson: Be proactive with AI clarity before launch.
[04:16] – Ticket Tailor Custom Domain Setup
Greg shared his Ticket Tailor interface and we walked through the CNAME DNS record setup for tickets.zelnickthemagician.com. David configured the record to point to Ticket Tailor’s servers and explained Cloudflare proxy settings. The custom domain ($8/month) lets customers buy tickets directly from Greg’s site without leaving to a third-party platform.
[12:53] – DNS Propagation & Verification Timing
We discussed the 24-hour propagation window for DNS changes and how to verify the setup once live. David left the Cloudflare proxy OFF to help Ticket Tailor see the record more easily. Key reminder: Be patient with DNS changes; they don’t activate instantly.
[16:07] – Contact Data Export Challenges & UUIDs
Ron shared his export from Mago showing only UUID strings instead of contact names and emails. David explained that the Mago.co export method is limited but a separate contacts export exists with better data. For Ron’s goal of segmenting 770 schools into leads, gigs, and prospects, we discussed the importance of filtering and using a virtual assistant for data enrichment.
[18:26] – Strategic Data Segmentation for Outreach
Ron wants to classify: 30 schools he’s performed for (booked gigs), 40 he’s corresponded with (leads), and 700 he hasn’t touched yet (prospects). Moving forward, the strategy is to remove engaged contacts from the master list as you work them. This prevents double-touching and keeps data clean.
[25:14] – Virtual Assistant for Contact Enrichment
Ron hired a VA from the Philippines at $5/hour to find missing principal and PTA/PTO emails from school websites and social media—working overnight while Ron sleeps. This investment fills gaps in his 770-school database and dramatically increases qualified contact coverage. Full-timers and part-timers alike: this is how to scale outreach without burning out.
[27:23] – Website Menu Navigation Bug: Relative vs. Full URLs
Dean’s CarnegieMagic.com had broken menu links when navigating between pages. The issue: menu items used relative links (e.g., “#shows”) that only worked on the homepage. Solution: replace with full URLs (e.g., https://carnegiemagic.com/shows). David implemented the fix live. Side effect: WordPress now highlights all same-page links as “current,” a minor CSS issue with a solution.
[29:50] – WordPress-Mago API Key Configuration
David set up Dean’s API key (valid through November 5, 2028) to connect WordPress directly to Mago. This integration enables “smart pages”—proposals, confirmation pages, client portals—that pull live client names, pricing, and custom data. Much cleaner than old shopping cart integrations.
[35:00] – Internal Gig Report Card Smart Page
David shared his custom post-gig form built with the WordPress-Mago integration. After every show, he rates: fun factor, client quality, venue quality, audience, total gig time, and performance type. This data auto-populates a Google Sheet for year-end analysis: which gigs bring joy? Which pay best? Which have the best clients? Data-driven decisions.
[39:52] – Dean’s Theater Residency Experience & Modern Parallels
Dean ran a 50-seat theater residency 20 years ago with consistent sellouts. Key wins: eliminated load/unload hassle, multiple shows per day, steady revenue. Marketing evolved from direct mail and bus tours to social media and influencer strategies. He highlighted how modern shows like The Magician’s Study (Las Vegas) use secrecy, exclusivity, and influencer partnerships to drive ticket sales. Relevance: residencies offer stability for full-timers.
[54:31] – Competitive Show Strategy: Tableside Magic & Word-of-Mouth
David discussed The Magician’s Table (multi-magician tableside show in Tampa) and The Magician’s Study (Las Vegas secret-location show). Both build buzz through exclusivity, influencer invites, and creative storytelling. Modern advantage: TikTok viral moments can cause rapid sellouts. Old approach (direct mail) is replaced by social proof and influencer marketing.
[01:00:25] – Google Ads Keyword Strategy & Negative Keywords
David advised on keyword targeting: event magicians WITHOUT public shows should exclude “magic shows near me” to avoid wasted ad spend. Residency shows and ticketed venues SHOULD target “magic shows near me.” Careful negative keyword management ensures your ad budget goes to qualified searchers actually looking to book or buy tickets.
[01:02:33] – Offline Conversion Tracking for Google Ads
David is building a system that tracks the full funnel: Google Ads clicks → leads → actual bookings → booking dollars. This is the metric most Magos miss. Right now we track clicks or leads; David’s system will show which keywords and ads generate not just leads but profitable bookings. Once live, this will revolutionize ROI decisions for paid advertising.
[01:13:55] – Next Steps: Mago API Integration for Greg
David offered to help Greg configure his Mago account username and password for WordPress plugin integration—similar to what we just did for Dean. This unlocks dynamic backend data for ticket sales pages, customer confirmations, and internal tracking. Greg to provide login credentials to proceed.
